Job Description:

Temporary Position (May to August)

Summary

The primary purpose of the Summer Jobs for Youth (SJFY) Leader is to support the young participants of the program to experience success; develop skills and confidence and gain work experience. The SJFY Leader will recruit both youth and employers for the program.  The SJFY Leader provides employment coaching to youth in the program and support these youth during their placements and in their transitions to future employment and education.  Placement support may include helping youth to find placements that match their interests, delivering pre-employment training and monitoring on-the-job activity.  Transition support may involve assessment, action plan development, group facilitation, one-to-one counselling, online/distance supports and case management.  Service is targeted to youth living in at-risk communities. 

 

Competencies Required

a.     Ability to facilitate workshops and group sessions in a positive and dynamic manner

b.     Ability to support youth with their job search in a supportive, solution-focused manner

c.      Experience working with youth in a teaching or counselling capacity

d.     Understand the high school system; credit recovery and co-operative education system

e.     Experience organizing and promoting events, including managing an event budget

f.       Comfort and familiarity with the use of various social media as outreach and marketing tools

g.     Good understanding of the local labour market and the challenges facing the unemployed

h.     Ability to promote confidentiality as a norm

i.       Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate effectively within a team environment

j.       Must treat all individuals with equal respect and interact in a tactful, supportive, professional manner

k.      Ability to advocate to employers and other service providers, on behalf of individuals requiring assistance with their job search

l.       Ability to work and communicate effectively within a team environment

m.    Ability to promote confidentiality as a norm

n.     Proficiency with computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office


Work Site Location:
a. Employment Resource Centre/Office setting with frequent travel to off-site locations within the KEYS catchment area; employment site visits. b. Professional appearance is required; casual business attire. c. 35 hours per week, Mon-Fri
Minimum Requirements / Work Experience:
a. A minimum of 2 years of post-secondary education preferably in Education or Social Work or combination of education and relevant work/volunteer experience
b.Experience working with disadvantaged youth, employers, schools and youth services.
c.Sound knowledge of all facets of job search and career development including current labour market trends
d.Excellent communication skills: verbal and written
e.Strong, confident presentation/facilitation skills
f.Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with ACCESS data bases and Excel
g.Proficiency in English. Bi-lingual - French and English is preferred.
h.Must possess a valid driver\'s licence and access to a reliable vehicle would be a definite asset.
i. A police check will be required.
